Codename Cypher Affiliation X-Men
Powers Translation – anything at any time. Doug has the ability to read something, and have it just make sense in his brain. Languages that are spoken to him, or around him, are also translated by his brain. His powers work on a subconscious level, meaning that Doug can't really explain how he translates things, he just knows when looking at something, what it says. His mutant ability allows him to be a walking, talking code breaker as well. Just don't ask him to explain how he translated what he's translated.
He's gifted as well when it comes to computers, having the ability to understand the language that computer programs are written in.
Potential Future Powers [based on a comment Doug made in one of his comic appearances - here]
The ability to read body language, and pick up on tells that a person is lying, annoyed, ect, that might not be obvious to a person not trained to look for such things. Body language is a kind of language after all, and it stands to reason that Doug could employ his skills in this regard. Doug hasn't ever considered this possibility, quite satisfied to mostly use his powers in the name of computers, and computer programming.
Technology None!
Bio The son, and only child of Philip and Sheila Ramsey, Doug was born, and subsequently raised in Salem Center, New York. He had a mostly normal childhood, and the most common comment on the report cards that got sent him from school was that Doug was a very bright child, but very introverted. Had anyone asked him, he would have told him how hard it was being the guy who liked to read, who didn't like sports, and oh yeah, was short, and had a Star Wars Episode Four, Mark Hamill -esque hair cut, and always seemed to be about two trends behind all the other kids. In short, Doug was your classic shy, nerdy kid.
It's safe to say, that since Doug was their only child that Phillip and Sheila spoiled their son a bit, and Doug always had the latest video game systems, and for his twelfth birthday his parents bought him a computer. He had it completely reprogrammed within a week, and than set about "fixing" his fathers computer. It was at this point that Doug's computer obsession began.
Discovering that he was good with computers, well it boosted Doug's self confidence. He grew out his hair, had a growth spurt, and stopped looking like a refuge from the 1970's. He also became friends with other guys and girls who shared similar interests to himself, and his computer skills grew by leaps and bounds. However no one, ever suspected that Doug was anything more, than simply a gifted kid. He was smart in other areas of academics as well (but not as outstandingly gifted as he was computers and languages). Why would they? His mutation, such as it was undetectable short of some sort of genetic screening (or you know, short of identification by Cerebro).
Doug entered high school with one goal – make the next few years pass by as quickly and painlessly as possible. Than he was going to get gone from Salem Center, head off to California and make his fortune there. He wanted to trade the East coast for the West, and trade his kind of boring, typical life for something more exciting. Phrases like; "be careful what you wish for" come to mind.
Not hurting in the grade department, Doug decided to use his computer skills for self gain. He offered to hack into the school computer system, and do some grade altering, for a price of course. It really wasn't about the money, it was about the challenge, and yes, it was about trying to look 'cool' in the eyes of his peers. Doug didn't get caught, but he did get ratted out by one of his 'clients', and than Doug got expelled, at which point Doug's parents hit the roof.
It was at this time that a new schooling option suddenly became available to Doug, he was contacted by representatives of Xavier's, and offered a place there. This was a little overwhelming for Doug, he had to adjust suddenly to the fact that his computer skills, and his skills with language, weren't because he was some sort of genius at that type of thing, but because his genes dictated it. That stung his ego a bit.
He also had to adjust to the fact that he was a mutant, and being offered a place at a mutant school. Mutants had been in the news a lot lately, and not exactly getting the best press ever. While previous to this, Doug had given little thought or consideration to the mutant / human drama, he now suddenly had to pay it a lot of attention. His parents told him that it was his choice, but made it obvious that they didn't exactly want him to go.
So Doug now finds himself living at Xavier's, [I'm not sure if he should be new, or have been there for a few months, I'm open to either] and going to school there. He hopes to stay on, or stick around after he graduates, not as an X-man mind you, but just sticking around to learn more about his powers, and also he likes playing with their state of the art computers.
The adjustment has been a bit tough for Doug – he's gone from being a "gifted" kid, at a regular school, to being a gifted kid in a school full of them. A school where gifted means things like, can walk through walls, control the weather, and turn into metal. His own language skills, seem pretty paltry by comparison. It would be fair to say that there are times when Doug wishes he had never wished for his life to be more interesting, but his life is more interesting now, and he's not entirely sure he likes it.
